Generally when travelling it is a good idea to have a copy of all your important personal information should you get in strife. Another idea for backing up your important travel documents is to scan and upload the files to a Cloud storage provider. MSN Hotmail/Windows Live has the ability for document storage as does Google Docs, there is also a site called Scribd that you can use too. I believe they are free to use within limits. These few are ones that I know of and have used and will take may file formats in particular the .doc, pdf, Jpg, .xls, file types most likely to be used in this scenario. Doing this will give you the freedom of being anywhere in the world and being able to print out the things that you need so long as you have access to a computer and internet. I would anticipate that people aboard the Concordia would have benefitted from this especially being able to print out a photocopy of ones passport. If there is anyone that knows other reputable Cloud Storage providers, don’t hesitate to post. As with anything online be aware of your security setting. make sure that you keep setting set to private, (unless you wish to share with others your information) and make sure you change passwords on a regular basis.

Pre-Travel Checklist

General Home Preparation

Water plants and mow lawn before leaving home or arrange for a neighbour to care for them while you’re away

Turn heating/cooling off

Stop all home-delivery services (mail, newspaper, milk, diapers, and so on) or arrange to have items picked up by a neighbour

Arrange for pet care at a kennel or in your home, including meals, groomer, contact vet in case pet needs medical attention while away

Security

Lock all windows and doors securely and remove any keys hidden outside the house

Tell neighbours that you’ll be away and how they can reach you in an emergency

Turn on your telephone answering machine. You may want to change the message on your answering machine at work to let your business contacts know you are out of town

Set lights and a radio on timers. Turn up the radio loud enough so it can be heard outside

Kitchen

Store food in your freezer to prevent having to run to the grocery store as soon as you return home

Try to eat meals using up all your perishables before you go, empty out the fridge of any left overs and perishables. You might even be able to give a neighbour or friend some things rather than toss in the bin

Empty all waste baskets & run the garbage disposal to eliminate the possibility of unpleasant odours

Wash the dishes (You’ll be sorry when you come back if you forget this!)

Personal preparation

Schedule a medical check-up before the trip. Ask your doctor about necessary vaccinations, and have any medical procedures done before you go

Update any personal identification so that it contains current information and a photograph

Ask your doctor to provide a letter regarding the medication you need, you could even fill out a medical release form so that if your doctor needs to be contacted regarding your medication he/she can be.

Pick up cash, change and travellers checks at the bank

Get a telephone calling card and take it with you

Fill out and send in your tax return form if you will be out of town at the deadline

Fill out an absentee voter form if you will be out of town at election time

Tell your friends how they can contact you if needed

Pay the rent and other bills. If you’re gone for an extended period of time, arrange for a friend or relative to pay the bills

Wash clothes that you’re not packing so that you only have to worry about the clothes you have when you get back

Break in new shoes to prevent blisters

Make multiple copies of all your travel documents, a copy for each traveller, plus copies for your emergency contact, and or upload all files to a Cloud provider

Have a book or magazine, puzzles will give you something to do if you are delayed

Purchase postcard stamps and take with you

Print address labels of people to send postcards to. It’s much lighter to carry a sheet of labels than your address book
